The Lazy Triathlete

Probably the world's laziest triathlete. Trying desperately to become more motivated.

Olympic down…and what’s up next?

So where have I been? Well, keeping somewhat busy, actually. And not just work, and friends, and all that other life stuff that get’s in the way. I’ve actually been sort-of training. Here’s a bit of backstory…

On June 4th, I completed the Mooseman with that sprint tri as my only training beforehand. It didn’t go great, but it wasn’t miserable either. The swim felt amazing. It was my first tri with a wetsuit, which was odd but considering how cold the water was, it wasn’t really an option. The bike was decent, although hillier than I would have liked. And (as always) the run was miserable. The silver lining there was, I ended up getting caught by one of my Team In Training buddies, and we finished the last half mile or so together. And then I got a massage and free ice cream!

See? I finished!

So yes, I swam a mile, biked 28 miles and did a 10k with no training. I know…I’m a brat. And I don’t say this to rub it in. I say it because it really got me thinking. If I can do that without training, what would happen if I really tried.

No we come to the “Yes, I’ve actually been training” part. I signed up of a half-marathon. Yeah, I don’t really believe it either, especially considering how much I hate running. But I actually really enjoy doing triathlons. So the way I see it, is that I am forcing myself to get better at my weakest sport. I’ve even come up with a new mantra:

“Trying to run…Running to Tri”

So there you have it. I’m about three weeks in to the training plan I’ve devised for myself & its going pretty great. I’m attempting to resist the urge to push myself beyond my training plan (everyone warns you about that one), but the runs feel good so far, so I’ve been adding a bit more distance than I should. Of course, I made the plan up myself (sort of), so I guess I can change it too. Today I just finished a 1.85 mile run & it felt great.

Can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s run brings!

Just pile it on

One part of my fitness (aka wedding prep) routine that I left out of my early post was this push-up obsession that I’ve started. For now, I’ve given up on the 100 PushUp Challenge (that can wait), but I am trying to get 100 total in every day.

The thing is, the arms are where the eyes go on the bride in wedding photos. Don’t believe me? It’s true. And you end up with women sticking their arms out like chicken wings to prevent ‘fat-arm’ which is nearly impossible to avoid — unless you have a push-up regime. And this is all fine, and its going decently well to boot.

So what’s my point? Well, a friend just recently finished his June2000 – a total of two thousand push-ups over the course of a month. Much kudos. But this lead to a July challenge – 5000 crunches in a month. And then he asked if I wanted in. I can’t say no. I’m a sucker for hitting a goal. So on top of the 100 push-ups a day, I will now have to average 162 crunches as well.

At least I have some hope of looking good if I can do all this.

So let’s be honest here…

For most people, planning a wedding & getting in better shape probably go hand-in-hand.  Great for them, but honestly, where the hell do they find the time?  OK, and yes, those of you you know me probably will say that I’m a work-aholic and that’s where I can find the extra time, and you are probably right. However, I have too many things on my platter & free time just isn’t there.

I have come up with some great alternatives to getting fit.

  • Wii Fit – loving it!! Even just 30 minutes here & there, and I at least feel like I’m doing something

  • Chores!! We’ve got room-painting, envelope-stuffing, closet-organization, laundry, dishes – full list of things to do that, even if they don’t keep me moving, at least keep me away from food

  • The trusty treadmill! Thanks to my wonderfully generous boss who was trying to sell her house, I ended up with a totally free treadmill. How can I not get fit, right? Well, the space it’s in isn’t ideal, but it works & I’ve been trying to use it when I can.

So do I have a real path (or even real fitness goals at this point)? No. I’d be lying if I said that I did. However, I have some year+ stuff that I’m considering. The biggest one being a Team-In-Training event next summer, which has the potential to be very cool.

Anyway…there’s the update for now. 59 days until the wedding.

Two in a row!

Went for another run yesterday (ok, you caught me – it was a jog, we all know that). It felt good, but I’m definitely not near ready for a 5k. Good thing I have 5 weeks.

I did come to the realization that running a loop on the path near my house wasn’t enough of a workout. So I searched the iPhone app store & found a few options for a gym-less/equipment-less workouts. I tried my first one last night & I am definitely feeling it today.

And to round it all out, I’m trying this too. That would just be cool to say that I could do it (and not be lying).

Finger’s crossed for being about to stick to this plan. I have a minimum of 10 pounds to lose before this wedding.
