With JJ and I both wanting to get outdoors more, especially with the weather being so mild this winter, we were looking for something that would take us beyond a walk around the neighborhood or trip to the dog park. That’s when I started doing more research around geocaching.
ge·o·cach·ing [jee-oh-kash-ing]
Noun; The outdoor sport or game of searching for hidden objects by using Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates posted on the Internet.
Basically, it’s an modern-day treasure hunt outdoors. You get a description and coordinates online (we like geocaching.com the best so far). Then you can drive or walk close to you location, and use your GPS to locate the cache. This is typically a waterproof container of various size (so far, we’ve found something as small as a film canister and as large as an ammo box), with a log & sometimes other goodies inside.
While our first one was a total fail (which I blame on the site we got it from & not the fact that we are bad at finding things), our subsequent attempts have all been successful & pretty awesome. Our favorites are the multi-part caches, which (as the name implies), have multiple stops before finding the ‘treasure’ box. Sometimes these stops have clues that you need to figure out, making it even more fun. Last weekend, we did two multi-caches & ended up hiking almost 5 miles between them. So it’s not running, biking, or swimming, but it’s definitely been something new that we’ve enjoyed.
